Friends of Pelham Sports, the nonprofit group that is looking to bring a turf field to Glover Field, has set a fundraising goal of $1 million to pay for the project at no cost to Pelham taxpayers.

To date, Friends of Pelham Sports has raised $450,000 in pledges and actual funds, according to FPS President Tim Cassidy. The group plans to ramp up its fundraising efforts now that the winter breaks are over.

According to Mr. Cassidy, Scott Hughes, who has been retained as an advisor to the School Board in this process, has estimated the cost of the field to be about $932,000, though Mr. Cassidy believes that cost may go down.

"I think $1 million is a good number to shoot for," said Mr. Cassidy. "We hope to have raised all of the money before this coming summer."

He went on to say that the goal of the group is to build the field in the summer of 2012.

While the type of turf field to be built has not been determined, it is the group's intention to present the School Board with a list of options and costs. Friends of Pelham Sports would pay for the construction. He also said that maintenance would still be covered by the School District, but, according to Mr. Cassidy, the maintenance would cost about $60,000 less annually. The machine needed to do the maintenance would be paid for as part of the $1 million donation.

To raise funds, Mr. Cassidy said the group plans on targeting all groups that use the field as well as reaching out to alumni for donations. Different members of the group are assigned to reach out to different factions of potential donors. He said the group will have a presence at athletic games and will also use mailings as a way to target funds.

"We are still pursuing all avenues," he said.

Friends of Pelham Sports is recognized as a non-for-profit and has 501 (c) (3) status. If interested in donating, please contact treasurer Vincent Mazzaro at Mazzaro@optonline.net. For more information, please visit http://friendsofpelhamsports. com/fps/index.html.
