Friends of Pelham Sports within $50,000 of Goal

The finish line is in sight and the Friends of Pelham Sports Board is asking the community for just $50,000 more to complete its goal of raising $1 million to install a new turf field at Glover Field, according to Friends of Pelham Sports Board President Joe Solimine Jr.

Following a successful fundraising weekend, the group’s grand total rose to $900,000 and Mr. Solimine said that some of the largest donors have pledged $50,000 more–but those checks will not be written until the community does its part and contributes the first $50,000. “We need help from the community and we need it now!” He said.

Over the past six months Friends of Pelham Sports has had numerous events to create awareness including cocktail parties at donors’ homes, shop parties at Westchester Collision, and T-shirt sales. Additionally, Board Member Chris Lauretani will be raising money for the cause at the upcoming Symmetry Sunset Sprints event on June 15.

Mr. Solimine said that the group is currently working with a consultant recommended by the Board of Education who has built and managed construction of more than 50 similar turf fields.

But he also said that while the turf field is Friends of Pelham Sports’ initial project, it will not be its last.

“There is a misconception that FPS is just about this turf field. We are a 501(c)3 that has been set up to operate in the same way that as Pelham Education Foundation. We want to be the PEF for athletics,” said Mr. Solimine who noted that some projects could be building a backstop for a Little League field, helping the hockey team pay for transportation to get to States, or redoing the pitching mound at Glover if it needs it.
