The finish line is in sight and the Friends of Pelham Sports Board is asking the community for just $50,000 more to complete its goal of raising $1 million to install a new turf field at Glover Field, according to Friends of Pelham Sports Board President Joe Solimine Jr.

Following a successful fundraising weekend, the group’s grand total rose to $900,000 and Mr. Solimine said that some of the largest donors have pledged $50,000 more–but those checks will not be written until the community does its part and contributes the first $50,000. “We need help from the community and we need it now!” He said.

Last March, Friends of Pelham Sports was formed with the goal of raising money privately to fund improvements in our recreational programs and facilities, thereby making Pelham a better place to live for all of us. Because of increasing pressure on state, local and school budgets, we decided to model the organizations after similar groups in nearby communities who have successfully funded capital projects that benefit high school sports programs, youth recreation programs, and public parks facilities; these projects were funded through private donations without using taxpayer dollars.

Result of State Artificial Turf Fields Study: No Elevated Health Risk
But higher contaminant levels at an indoor field suggest ventilation needs

HARTFORD – A new study of artificial turf fields containing crumb rubber infill conducted by four state agencies shows that health risks are not elevated from playing on the fields. However, higher contaminant levels at one indoor field indicate that ventilation of indoor fields should be considered. Storm water run off findings indicate that proper management of this run off is prudent to address possible environmental effects.

The study findings were peer reviewed by the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering, whose comments were incorporated into the final report.

School Board Discussing Turf Field Proposal

Members of the Pelham Board of Education gave qualified support Monday night to plans by the Friends of Pelham Sports to raise funds for a synthetic turf field at Glover Field. The group has pledges of $400,000 and proposes to donate enough funds to cover costs of the turf field and its maintenance.

“I am supportive at this time, but details need to be worked out,” said Board Vice President Bob Eicher, suggesting legal, engineering, finance and type of materials as the details. “But none are insurmountable,” he added.

All School Board members agreed that the details need to be worked out. Dr. Martha Arden added, “Do not rush into it.” She also wants to continue to hear more on the issues from the community.

A specific qualification voiced by School Board member Lisa Kiernan was that the type of materials should be something other than crumb rubber (cut up tires of all brands, types)—the material used in most synthetic turf fields in Westchester.

Earlier in the meeting, Dr. Scott Ely, a cancer researcher, told the Board that crumb rubber produces carcinogens and lead that come into the air when heated. “It is measurable, but we don’t know the effect or what is acceptable,” he said. “Even if one of our children possibly gets cancer, it is one too many.” He suggested that if a synthetic turf is approved it should be made of natural rubber because it has no carcinogens.

Private Group Would Donate Funds to School District - Topic on Agenda Monday, June 21

The Pelham Board of Education will discuss and hear public comments on a turf field proposal at its meeting on Monday, June 21. A private group of residents, called Friends of Pelham Sports, has $400,000 in pledges for the project and wants to begin collecting funds this month, once it receives tax exempt status.

At the School Board's last meeting on June 7, Tim Cassidy, president of the group, said: "What we would like is some type of commitment from the Board for our endeavor. Working with you and with your guidance, we would like to raise the full amount for this project."

The goal is to raise funds for one turf field, probably to be located at the Glover Field complex that currently has grass fields.

School Board President John Brice said the Board could not respond that evening but he requested that Assistant Superintendent for Business Angelo Rubbo obtain guidelines and information from the State Department of Education and attorneys for accepting funds in this kind of situation.
